Ben Johnson's Offensive Revolution Arrives in Chicago
The Chicago Bears made the biggest coaching upgrade in the NFL by hiring Ben Johnson as their new head coach. Johnson was the mastermind behind Detroit's historic offense that dominated the league for three straight years.
From Detroit Dominance to Chicago Dreams
Johnson built something special in Detroit. The Lions scored 68 touchdowns last season, which was the second-highest total in NFL history. Over Johnson's three years as offensive coordinator, Detroit led the NFL in both total plays and touchdowns scored.
The Lions averaged 59 touchdowns per season under Johnson's system. They ran more plays than any other team in the league. Johnson turned players like Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown into superstars.
Fixing Chicago's Broken Offense
Chicago's offense was completely dysfunctional last year. Wide receivers ran into each other during plays. Players gave up on routes and walked to the sideline. The Bears scored only 33 touchdowns, well below the NFL average of 39 to 41.
Johnson saw the mess and knew he could fix it. He turned down other coaching jobs, including opportunities with rookie quarterbacks, to wait for the perfect situation. When Chicago called, he knew this was his chance.
The Perfect Storm of Talent
The Bears surrounded quarterback Caleb Williams with incredible weapons. DJ Moore and Rome Odunze lead a deep receiving group that now includes rookie Luther Burden. First-round tight end Colston Loveland joins Cole Kmet to give Williams two reliable targets.
Chicago also completely rebuilt their offensive line. They added four new starters, including center Drew Dalman and guard Jonah Jackson. The line went from bottom-three in the league to projected top-ten.
Championship Expectations
Johnson's offenses run lots of plays and score lots of touchdowns. His Detroit teams averaged over 1,000 plays per season. The Lions threw the ball downfield and found creative ways to get players open.
Caleb Williams enters his second season with everything set up for success. The protection is better, the weapons are elite, and the play-caller is proven. Johnson has turned around offenses before, and Chicago gives him his best collection of talent yet.
The Bears are ready to shock the NFL with their new high-powered offense.
