Buccaneers Bounce Back with 20-17 Victory Over Cardinals Behind Mayfield's Leadership
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers approached Sunday's game with an urgent need for victory to sustain their playoff aspirations. With a record of 6-5 and reeling from a lopsided 34-7 defeat against the Rams, the Buccaneers faced the struggling Arizona Cardinals, who held a record of 3-8. This matchup appeared to be an ideal opportunity for a redemption.
The Cardinals, under the guidance of quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who stepped in for the injured Kyler Murray, were in pursuit of their first win in five attempts. Despite their disappointing season, Arizona had demonstrated resilience in recent weeks, particularly through the standout performances of tight end Trey McBride and rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
First Quarter: Defensive Battle
Both teams commenced the game slowly, engaging in a defensive struggle. The Buccaneers' initial drive faltered when Baker Mayfield was sacked, leading to a fumble that running back Rachaad White managed to recover. Arizona’s first series held promise as Brissett connected with Harrison Jr. twice for a combined 18 yards, yet the drive ended on a sour note when safety Antoine Winfield Jr. intercepted a pass intended for Michael Wilson inside the red zone.
As the quarter came to a close, neither offense had managed to score, with each team’s formidable defense prevailing.
Second Quarter: Bucs Strike First
Tampa Bay finally made headway midway through the second quarter. Following a meticulously executed drive that featured a 31-yard reception by Chris Godwin down the left sideline, the Buccaneers settled for a 25-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin, establishing a 3-0 lead.
In response, the Cardinals ramped up their efforts as the half drew to a close. Brissett spearheaded an impressive two-minute drill, completing key passes to Harrison Jr. (21 yards) and Wilson (10 yards) to position themselves for a field goal. Chad Ryland successfully converted a 52-yard attempt as time expired, thereby tying the game 3-3 at halftime.
The Buccaneers were not finished just yet. With 1:39 left on the clock, Mayfield orchestrated a scoring drive of his own, concluding with a creatively designed 2-yard touchdown pass directed to offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs. The Buccaneers carried a 10-3 advantage into the half.
Third Quarter: Explosive Scoring
The second half ignited with a series of explosive offensive plays. Arizona took the initiative first as Brissett connected with running back Bam Knight for a 15-yard touchdown pass, culminating a 10-play, 80-yard drive that highlighted the Cardinals’ offensive balance. Knight had proven to be a key player, effectively running the ball and contributing 36 receiving yards.
Tampa Bay responded immediately. Mayfield found his rhythm, completing a 23-yard pass to Emeka Egbuka before Bucky Irving surged into the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown run. The young running back demonstrated his fireworks potential when healthy, even while dealing with minor injuries.
As the quarter concluded, Arizona trailed 17-10, but they had demonstrated that they could effectively advance the ball against Tampa Bay’s defense.
Fourth Quarter: McBride's Heroics
The final quarter showcased the prowess of Trey McBride. The Cardinals' standout tight end continued his impressive season by making critical catches to sustain drives. His most pivotal moment came with 5:02 remaining when Brissett delivered a 15-yard touchdown pass to McBride, thereby leveling the score at 17-17.
McBride concluded the game with 8 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown, adding another remarkable performance to his career-defining 2025 season. Brissett achieved a commendable 301 passing yards with 2 touchdowns, surpassing Mayfield’s 194 yards and 1 touchdown.
Nevertheless, McLaughlin secured the game-winning moment with 9:03 left, successfully kicking a 57-yard field goal that ultimately made the difference.
Looking Ahead
This victory elevates Tampa Bay’s record to 7-5, keeping them firmly in the playoff race despite their recent difficulties. The Buccaneers demonstrated impressive resilience following their loss to Los Angeles, with Mayfield skillfully managing the game and the defense generating crucial turnovers.
Unfortunately for Arizona, they now stand at 3-9, extending their losing streak to four games. However, despite the defeat, the Cardinals exhibited noteworthy progress, particularly from Brissett and their receiving unit.
Both teams will aim to build upon their performances as they prepare for the upcoming challenges in the latter part of the season.
