Don’t Look Now, but the Lakers Are Elite Again
The Los Angeles Lakers have entered the 2025 NBA season with an impressive blend of confidence, resilience, and a few unexpected developments. Despite experiencing some early injuries, they have surged to a commendable 7–2 record, currently securing the second position in the Western Conference, right behind the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. After a challenging few years, it is safe to say that the Lakers have truly returned to prominence.
A Hot Start to the Season
The Lakers commenced their season facing formidable opponents within the Western Conference, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors. This challenging early schedule not only tested their skills but also demonstrated their capability to compete with any team in the league.
Luka Dončić started off with a spectacular performance, scoring an astonishing 49 points against the Timberwolves on October 24. Just two days later, in Dončić's absence due to injury, Austin Reaves capitalized on the opportunity by scoring 51 points in a thrilling encounter against the Sacramento Kings. The ability of each player to step up and lead the team underscores the significant offensive potential that the Lakers now possess.
In a recent matchup against the Miami Heat, which ended in a 130–120 victory on November 2, Dončić achieved a triple-double, contributing 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Reaves complemented this performance with 26 points and 11 assists, highlighting the growing synergy between the two players. Following this, the team's victory over the Spurs propelled the Lakers to an impressive 7–2 record, marking one of the best starts in the league.
New Faces, Familiar Challenges
Last summer, the Lakers surprised the basketball community by trading Anthony Davis along with a single first-round draft pick for Luka Dončić. This bold move signified a new strategic direction, focusing on building the team around Luka's playmaking abilities rather than LeBron James's scoring prowess.
Additionally, they acquired Deandre Ayton to address issues related to rebounding and defense. The acquisition of Marcus Smart adds crucial leadership and tenacity. At the age of 40, LeBron James continues to be the team’s emotional cornerstone, although he has been sidelined at the beginning of the season due to a sciatica injury. His anticipated return could significantly enhance the team's competitiveness.
Early Signs of Something Special
The Lakers’ recent five-game winning streak has been fueled by a variety of players stepping up and delivering stellar performances each night. Even in LeBron's absence, their impressive depth and cohesive teamwork have allowed them to maintain their momentum. In their upcoming game against the Atlanta Hawks, they will have yet another opportunity to demonstrate that their strong start is not merely a coincidence.
If Dončić continues to perform at an MVP-caliber level and Reaves continues to develop, the Lakers might transcend being just another playoff team; they could very well be serious contenders once more.
