Steelers Edge Jets 34-32 in Thrilling Season Opener
The 2025 NFL season began with an exciting game between two teams hoping for new beginnings. The Pittsburgh Steelers came to face the New York Jets. Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers played for Pittsburgh against his old team, while the Jets started fresh with quarterback Justin Fields leading their new offense under head coach Aaron Glenn.
First Quarter: Trading Early Blows
The game began with both teams showing their different offensive styles. The Jets scored first, using their strong running game. Breece Hall, the star of New York's running attack, made an immediate impact with an 18-yard run. After a good drive with Hall and backup Braelon Allen, the Jets got a 35-yard field goal from Nick Folk, putting them ahead 3-0.
Pittsburgh quickly responded, showing how well Aaron Rodgers worked with his new receivers. Rodgers found DK Metcalf for an important 23-yard catch and then threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Ben Skowronek. The Steelers took a 7-3 lead after showing the strength of their new players.
The Jets fought back with a big play. Justin Fields, using his skills as a runner and passer, threw a great 33-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson. The connection between the two former college teammates was strong, but a missed extra point meant the score was 9-7 for New York at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Offensive Fireworks Continue
In the second quarter, both teams focused on their running games. Pittsburgh moved ahead 10-9 with a 56-yard field goal from Chris Boswell. However, the Jets' running game began to shine.
Fields showed why the Jets wanted him. He ran for 15 yards to set up a touchdown. Braelon Allen ran it in from 8 yards out, giving the Jets a 16-10 lead at halftime. Allen's score revealed that the Jets could use both Hall and Allen to create scoring chances.
Pittsburgh wasn’t ready to give up. Rodgers found Calvin Austin III for a great 30-yard gain, then connected with him again for 21 yards. Jonnu Smith finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown catch, putting the Steelers up 17-16 at the half.
Second Half: Back-and-forth Battle
The third quarter featured more close scoring. Fields scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Jets a 23-17 lead. But Jaylen Warren answered for Pittsburgh with a 5-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter.
The Steelers took control when Austin caught an 18-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 31-23. Yet, the Jets weren't done. Fields capped off a great drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, though a failed two-point conversion left them trailing 31-29.
A late field goal by Boswell sealed the game, and Pittsburgh won 34-32.
Impact and Looking Ahead
Even though they lost, the Jets showed that their new offense can compete well. Hall finished with 107 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. Fields passed for 218 yards and rushed for 48 more, scoring three touchdowns.
For Pittsburgh, the win showed that their veteran players made a difference. Rodgers managed the game well and Metcalf gave them a powerful deep threat.
Both teams will look to improve upon this thrilling opener as they prepare for their Week 2 games against division rivals.
