Healthy Jordan Love Leads Green Bay to Convincing Win at Lambeau Field
The Green Bay Packers started their 2025 season with a strong win over the Detroit Lions, beating them 27-13 at Lambeau Field on Sunday night. This game was part of the NFC North division and featured two teams with very different hopes for the new season.
The Packers were feeling good about 2025, especially with quarterback Jordan Love back to health after dealing with MCL and groin injuries in 2024. Even with those injuries, Love had good numbers, averaging eight yards per throw. The team added new talent, including first-round wide receiver Matthew Golden, and traded for top pass rusher Micah Parsons.
The Lions faced big challenges this season after losing their offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to Chicago and replacing two starting offensive linemen, including retired center Frank Ragnow. They were working hard to keep their explosive offensive style after scoring a record 68 touchdowns in 2024, the second-highest in NFL history.
First Quarter: Packers Strike First
The Packers quickly got their offense going. After a strong kickoff return by Savion Williams was called back for a holding penalty, the Packers moved down the field steadily. Jordan Love showed he was back in good shape, throwing a 20-yard pass to Romeo Doubs on the left side.
The drive continued with Love completing an 11-yard pass to rookie Matthew Golden and a 16-yard pass to Dontayvion Wicks. A penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct on Detroit's Brian Branch helped the Packers reach the red zone. Love finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tucker Kraft.
Detroit struggled on their first drive. Their offense went three plays and then had to punt. The Packers added a 34-yard field goal by Brandon McManus, taking a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Lions Respond, Packers Answer Back
In the second quarter, Detroit finally got going with running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery leading a nice drive. The Lions mixed up their plays well, with quarterback Jared Goff connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown and also using his running backs in passing plays. The drive ended with a 30-yard field goal by Jake Bates, making it 10-3.
The Packers answered right away with a big play. Love threw a perfect 48-yard pass to Romeo Doubs, who ended the game with 68 receiving yards on just two catches. Two plays later, Love found Jayden Reed for a 17-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 17-3.
Detroit managed to kick another field goal before halftime, making the score 17-6. This drive looked promising until Goff threw an interception to Evan Williams in the red zone.
Second Half: Packers Control the Game
The third quarter was all about the Packers' running game, with Josh Jacobs leading the way. Jacobs, who joined the Packers in 2024, ran the ball 19 times for 66 yards and caught the ball for four yards. He found running lanes and really wore down the Lions' defense.
Detroit could only manage one field goal in the third quarter. They had a long drive that included good catches by tight end Sam LaPorta, but they could not score a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Jacobs scored a 3-yard touchdown run after a long drive. This gave the Packers a strong 24-6 lead. Green Bay kicked another field goal, making it 27-6. Detroit scored a late touchdown, but the final score was 27-13.
Looking Ahead
This win shows that the Packers made good moves in the offseason and that Jordan Love can lead the team when he is healthy. The mix of Love's passing skills, Jacobs' running, and the strong receivers like Doubs, Reed, and rookie Golden gives hope for the Packers' chances in the playoffs.
For the Lions, this loss shows how hard it can be to replace important players. They will need to improve their offense and do better in the red zone as they adjust to changes without Ben Johnson.
Both teams will look to build on this first game as they prepare for their next matchups in Week 2.
