Vikings Beat Bears 27-24 in Thrilling Season Opener
McCarthy Leads Minnesota to Victory in First Career Start
The Minnesota Vikings started the 2025 NFL season with a close 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy got his first professional win, and many think this will be a big season for both teams.
Two Teams with Championship Dreams
The Vikings began 2025 with high hopes. They have one of the best teams in the NFL, including star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and a strong defense that had the most turnovers last season. Minnesota added to their offensive line by bringing in center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries from Indianapolis. On the other hand, the Bears hired new head coach Ben Johnson, who created the best offense in Detroit for the past three seasons. They hope he can help second-year quarterback Caleb Williams do even better.
First Quarter: Bears Strike First
The Bears started strong in the first quarter. Williams showed he could handle pressure better with his improved offensive line. The Bears moved the ball downfield, with Williams completing passes to DJ Moore and Rome Odunze. He then rushed for a nine-yard touchdown, putting Chicago ahead 7-0 after Cairo Santos kicked the extra point.
McCarthy and the Vikings had trouble getting started. He took his first NFL sack, and the Vikings only got one first down on their first drives.
Second Quarter: Field Goals and Big Plays
In the second quarter, both teams kicked field goals. Will Reichard made a 31-yard field goal, bringing Minnesota to 7-3. The Bears kept moving down the field, as Williams connected with Moore and Odunze again. Santos added a 42-yard field goal to make it 10-3.
At the end of the half, McCarthy showed his skill by hitting Jalen Nailor for a 28-yard gain. Reichard then kicked a 59-yard field goal as time ran out, making the score 10-6 at halftime.
Third Quarter: Defense Creates Points
The Bears' defense shone in the third quarter. Cornerback Nahshon Wright intercepted McCarthy's pass meant for Jefferson and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown, increasing the Bears' lead to 17-6. This moment showed the challenges a rookie quarterback faces against NFL defenses.
However, the Bears could not score more, missing a 50-yard field goal by Santos to finish the quarter.
Fourth Quarter: McCarthy's Comeback
In the last quarter, McCarthy showed why the Vikings believe he can help them win. He led two touchdown drives, first hitting Jefferson for a 13-yard touchdown, then connecting with veteran running back Aaron Jones for a great 27-yard touchdown. Jones had 67 total yards and that important score.
McCarthy finished his comeback with a 14-yard rushing touchdown, showing his ability to both pass and run. Even though the Bears got a late touchdown pass from Williams to Odunze, the Vikings won 27-24.
Looking Ahead
This win proves that the Vikings trust McCarthy in Kevin O'Connell's quarterback-friendly system. In his debut, McCarthy had 143 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown, showing he can stay calm when it counts.
For Chicago, the loss hurts but shows that Johnson's offense has potential. Williams threw for more than 300 yards and made better choices with improved protection.
Both teams will try to build on this game as they continue their NFC North battles in Week 2.
