Saints Shock Buccaneers 24-20 Behind Tyler Shough's Dual-Threat Performance
The New Orleans Saints (2-10) traveled to Tampa Bay looking to play spoiler against the playoff-hopeful Buccaneers (7-5). While the Saints had little to play for except pride, the Bucs needed every win to secure their postseason spot in the competitive NFC South.
First Quarter: Fast Start for New Orleans
The Saints came out firing on all cylinders! After a spectacular 54-yard kickoff return by Marcus Tipton set up excellent field position, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough quickly got to work. He connected with emerging receiver Devaughn Vele for 16 yards, then found reliable tight end Juwan Johnson for 12 more yards. Shough showed off his scrambling ability with an 11-yard run before rookie running back Devin Neal punched it in from 3 yards out for the touchdown.
Tampa Bay answered right back with their own impressive drive. Baker Mayfield found Chris Godwin for a beautiful 21-yard gain, setting up a perfect 24-yard touchdown pass to running back Bucky Irving. The quarter ended tied 7-7, with both offenses looking sharp.
Second Quarter: Defense Takes Center Stage
The second quarter belonged to the defenses. Saints kicker Cameron Smyth missed a 48-yard field goal attempt, keeping the game tied. Then Tampa Bay's defense made a huge play when cornerback Zyon McCollum intercepted Shough's deep pass and returned it 19 yards. The Bucs capitalized with a 41-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
Both quarterbacks struggled in the second quarter. Shough was sacked twice, while Mayfield completed just 7 of 15 passes. The Saints' defense stepped up when they needed it most, forcing Tampa Bay to settle for the field goal instead of a touchdown.
Third Quarter: Explosive Plays Everywhere
The third quarter was pure excitement! First, Saints safety Alontae Taylor picked off Mayfield's deep pass, giving New Orleans great field position. Then came the play of the game - Tyler Shough kept the ball on a read option and sprinted 34 yards untouched into the end zone! The young quarterback showed incredible speed and vision on the touchdown run.
Tampa Bay responded with their own scoring drive, highlighted by a 28-yard pass interference penalty. Sean Tucker, getting more opportunities in the backfield rotation, capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. The Saints added a 30-yard field goal late in the quarter, making it 17-17 heading into the final frame.
Fourth Quarter: Shough Shines When It Matters
With the game on the line, Tyler Shough proved he belonged on the big stage. The rookie quarterback led a masterful drive, connecting with Chris Olave twice for crucial first downs. Then Shough showed his dual-threat ability again, scrambling 13 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game!
Tampa Bay tried to respond, but their offense couldn't find the end zone. Bucky Irving broke free for a 32-yard run, but the drive stalled in the red zone. McLaughlin's 37-yard field goal cut the lead to 24-20, but it wasn't enough.
Shough finished with 144 passing yards and 55 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. Devin Neal had a breakout performance with 70 rushing yards and 19 carries. For Tampa Bay, Chris Godwin led receivers with 55 yards on 5 catches, while Bucky Irving added 55 rushing yards.
Looking Ahead
This stunning upset moves the Saints to 3-10, giving their young players valuable experience. The loss drops Tampa Bay to 7-6, making their remaining games even more crucial for playoff positioning. Both teams will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next challenges in what promises to be an exciting finish to the season.
