Steph Curry Has the Warriors Looking Like Contenders... For Now
For more than a decade, the Golden State Warriors have exemplified the evolution of modern basketball. At 37 years old, Stephen Curry continues to stand as the most remarkable shooter the sport has ever produced, and remarkably, he is still shouldering the team's responsibilities. After five games, Curry has been exhilarating to watch, averaging 27 points per game and propelling the Warriors to a promising 4-1 start that has the Bay Area fanbase envisioning one more championship run.
A Statement Win Over the Clippers
On Tuesday night, Golden State showcased a commanding performance against the Los Angeles Clippers, winning 98–79 in a manner that harkened back to the team's defensive prowess. Curry recorded 19 points and delivered eight assists, while Jimmy Butler, newly acquired at last year’s trade deadline, added a crucial element of toughness and playmaking on both ends of the court, all while Draymond Green anchored the defense.
This victory improved the Warriors’ record to 4-1, marking one of their best starts in recent years, and demonstrated glimpses of the championship caliber that established them as legends in the sport.
A Single Blemish in Portland
The Warriors' only setback occurred on the road against the tough, defense-oriented Portland Trail Blazers, led by Jrue Holiday. Despite Curry scoring an impressive 35 points in that matchup, it was insufficient, as the Blazers effectively controlled the tempo and secured the victory. Nevertheless, Curry’s exceptional display reinforced his ability to dominate on any given night, even when faced with top-tier defenders.
Can Experience Still Win in the West?
The Western Conference remains as competitive as ever. The Denver Nuggets appear poised to reclaim their status atop the league, bolstered by Nikola Jokić and a stronger roster since their championship win in 2023. The Memphis Grizzlies have their stars, Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., back in action, Oklahoma City is emerging as a formidable powerhouse, and the Clippers retain seasoned veterans like James Harden and Kawhi Leonard.
Golden State's core group, consisting of Curry, Butler, Green, and the recently extended Jonathan Kuminga, supplies the squad with invaluable experience and tenacity. However, there are lingering doubts regarding their overall depth and athleticism. The days of their small-ball dominance seem to be behind them.
The Clock Is Ticking
Although the Warriors may no longer be the quickest or most well-rounded team in the league, as long as Stephen Curry is on the court, they pose a significant threat. His extraordinary shooting ability, leadership qualities, and unwavering confidence ensure that Golden State remains a relevant force in a crowded Western Conference race.
For the time being, they are indeed contenders. However, with the urgency of the dynasty's clock growing louder with each passing season, this could very well be their final substantial opportunity to add another championship banner to the rafters of Chase Center.
