The NBA Season Opens in Style
The 2025–26 NBA season tipped off with an unforgettable opening night. From clutch free throws in Oklahoma City to a new superstar duo in San Francisco, basketball fans got a show.
Thunder Survive in a Ring Night Thriller
The Oklahoma City Thunder began their title defense with a wild 125–124 double-overtime win over the Houston Rockets. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points and calmly sank the game-winning free throws with only a few seconds left. Chet Holmgren added 28 points, showing why the Thunder are favorites to repeat as champions.
For Houston, Alperen Şengün was incredible with 39 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Durant scored 23 in his Rockets debut before fouling out late. Even though they lost, the Rockets showed they can compete with the best.
Jimmy Butler Shines in Warriors Debut
In Los Angeles, the Golden State Warriors spoiled Luka Dončić’s big night, beating the Lakers 119–109. Jimmy Butler scored 31 points in his first game with the team, while Stephen Curry added 23.
Luka tried to carry the Lakers, dropping 43 points, but without LeBron James (out with sciatica), the team couldn’t keep up.
What It Means for the Season Ahead
The Thunder look ready to defend their crown. They return all their stars from last season’s 68-win team, including MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and rising star Chet Holmgren.
The Rockets are no longer underdogs. With Şengün, Amen Thompson, and now Kevin Durant, they’re built to challenge the top teams in the West.
For the Lakers, Luka Dončić is already proving he’s a superstar in Los Angeles. But they’ll need LeBron and more help to make a real run.
In Golden State, the first full season of the Jimmy Butler era started with a bang. Curry and Butler might not be the youngest duo, but they still know how to win.
A Season Full of Storylines
Opening night made one thing clear: the NBA is loaded with talent. OKC wants to go back-to-back, the Rockets want to rise, the Warriors want one more run and Luka hopes to establish himself as Los Angeles' next legend.
Basketball season is back, and it’s going to be a fun one!
