Week 2 NFL Power Rankings: The Top Early Season Teams
The top half of the league is where Super Bowl dreams begin to separate from early-season hype. These teams flashed star power, resilience, and playoff potential in Week 1. Let’s break down where each contender stands heading into Week 2.
16. Pittsburgh Steelers (▲)
Aaron Rodgers’ black-and-gold debut delivered thrills in a narrow 34-32 win over the Jets. Rodgers spread the ball to DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III, while Chris Boswell nailed clutch kicks. The defense bent but didn’t break, showing Mike Tomlin’s trademark grit. Pittsburgh climbs thanks to veteran leadership and late-game execution.
15. Cincinnati Bengals (▼)
Joe Burrow and the Bengals barely escaped Cleveland with a 17-16 win. Burrow was sacked multiple times and the offense looked sluggish outside of Chase Brown’s early score. A missed Browns field goal saved them, but Cincinnati will need sharper protection and rhythm to stay among the elite.
14. Dallas Cowboys (–)
The Cowboys fought the Eagles tough in a 24-20 loss. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb moved the ball, while Javonte Williams scored the opener. But trading Micah Parsons left the defense lacking its game-wrecker, and red-zone inefficiency sealed their fate. Dallas stays mid-pack until the defense finds its bite.
13. San Francisco 49ers (▼)
Christian McCaffrey’s return steadied San Francisco in a 17-13 road win over Seattle, but sloppy play kept the game closer than it should have been. Brock Purdy leaned on Kittle, and the defense came up big late with a Nick Bosa sack. Now, with the loss of Kittle and potentially Purdy, it could be hard for the niners to keep pace in the NFC.
12. Denver Broncos (▼)
Denver leaned on its suffocating defense in a 20-12 win over Tennessee. Rookie QB Bo Nix was steady, and Courtland Sutton found the end zone, but it was the six sacks on Cam Ward and a late J.K. Dobbins touchdown that sealed it. This team looks balanced, but the offense must take the next step.
11. Minnesota Vikings (▲)
Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy rallied from a pick-six to lead a dramatic 27-24 comeback win over the Bears. He threw two touchdowns and ran for another, showing poise well beyond his years. With Justin Jefferson as his anchor, the Vikings rise on the strength of their belief in their new signal caller.
10. Los Angeles Rams (▲)
The Rams won a defensive slugfest 14-9 over Houston. Matthew Stafford was pressured but connected with Davante Adams and Puka Nacua when it mattered. The defense held C.J. Stroud in check, and Nick Chubb’s debut was contained. It wasn’t flashy, but L.A. proved they can win gritty games.
9. Los Angeles Chargers (▲)
Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers looked sharp in a 27-21 upset of the Chiefs. Rookie RB Omarion Hampton showed promise, and Justin Herbert threw two touchdowns to Quentin Johnston. The defense pressured Mahomes and held up late. After years of inconsistency, this felt like a statement win.
8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (▲)
Baker Mayfield kept the fireworks going in a 23-20 thriller over Atlanta, tossing three touchdowns, including two to rookie Emeka Egbuka. Mike Evans still made plays, and the offense found balance with Bucky Irving. The Bucs’ clutch final drive cements them as serious NFC South contenders.
7. Detroit Lions (▼)
Detroit was handled 27-13 by Green Bay, exposing issues without Ben Johnson calling plays. Jared Goff had flashes, but turnovers and red-zone stalls hurt. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs remain weapons, but if the line doesn’t gel, the Lions may slip further in the NFC North race.
6. Washington Commanders (▲)
Jayden Daniels started Year 2 with a clean 21-6 win over the Giants, throwing for 233 yards and a touchdown while adding his trademark rushing threat. New arrival Deebo Samuel Sr. adds versatility, and rookie RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt found the end zone. Washington’s arrow points up as Daniels looks in control.
5. Green Bay Packers (–)
A fully healthy Jordan Love carved Detroit’s defense, throwing for two scores and leading a balanced attack in a 27-13 win. Josh Jacobs pounded the ball on the ground, while Micah Parsons debuted as a pass-rushing force. Green Bay looks like a complete team ready to challenge the NFC elite.
4. Kansas City Chiefs (▼)
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs fell short 27-21 against the Chargers. Mahomes accounted for over 300 total yards and connected with Travis Kelce for a late score, but protection issues and the loss of WR Xavier Worthy to injury hurt. The defense is still tough, but the champs have adjustments to make.
3. Baltimore Ravens (▲)
Baltimore lost a heartbreaker 41-40 to Buffalo, but their offense showed it can still light up the scoreboard. Lamar Jackson accounted for three touchdowns, Derrick Henry looked spry, and Zay Flowers emerged again. The defense gave up too much late, but the Ravens remain an AFC powerhouse.
2. Buffalo Bills (▲)
Josh Allen orchestrated one of the great Week 1 comebacks, throwing for 394 yards and scoring four total TDs in a 41-40 win over Baltimore. Rookie WR Keon Coleman shined in crunch time. Buffalo’s resilience and Allen’s MVP form push them near the top of the league.
1. Philadelphia Eagles (–)
The reigning champs outlasted Dallas 24-20 despite a lightning delay and uneven rhythm. Jalen Hurts scored twice, Saquon Barkley pounded the ball, and the defense stood tall late. With a stacked roster and continuity, the Eagles remain the league’s standard until someone knocks them off.
The top half of the rankings is loaded with contenders, from the Eagles’ complete roster to the Bills’ late-game magic and the Ravens’ offensive firepower. With early statement wins from teams like the Chargers, Buccaneers, and Packers, the race for playoff position is already heating up.
