With October in Mind, Cubs Hunt for a Frontline Starter
The Chicago Cubs are soaring in the National League this season. With a record of 38-23, they hold the top position in the NL Central, driven by the league’s most formidable offense.
A significant component of that success is attributed to their dynamic outfield trio: All-Star Kyle Tucker, the dependable Seiya Suzuki, and Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has emerged as a budding star in center field. Nevertheless, despite their offensive prowess, the Cubs recognize the pressing need for additional support in their pitching rotation if they aspire to make a substantial playoff run.
Injuries Test the Cubs' Rotation
The Cubs are currently facing challenges as two of their premier starting pitchers, Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, are sidelined due to injuries. Steele underwent season-ending elbow surgery, while Imanaga is recuperating from a hamstring strain. Their absence has put the Cubs' starting rotation to the test. Presently, their team ERA stands at 3.84, placing them 14th in the league—fairly average for a team with championship aspirations.
Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon have provided reliable performances, albeit without the flair that often characterizes standout pitchers. The Cubs understand that this level of pitching may fall short in the pressure cooker of October competition. To effectively contend against elite teams such as the Dodgers, Phillies, or Mets, they require star-caliber arms capable of delivering crucial outs during decisive moments.
Cubs President Eyes Trade Market
Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, candidly discussed the challenges ahead in a recent interview with Marquee Sports Network.
“To quote our manager, we just need to get outs, you know?” Hoyer remarked. “And so we have to figure that out, whether it’s the beginning of the game or the end of the game. Our depth has been tested, and we have to assume that that’s not going to stop, that we’ll continue to be tested.”
This acknowledgment has led the Cubs to adopt an aggressive approach as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.
Potential Fits for the Cubs Rotation
One potential target that has surfaced is Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins. Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022, yet he has faced challenges this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Nonetheless, many believe that with the proper mentorship and a supportive team environment, he could regain his former excellence. Should the Cubs have confidence in his ability to revert to his peak performance, Alcantara could prove to be a transformative addition.
Another prospect is Zac Gallen from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallen was an All-Star in 2023, but he is navigating a turbulent year with a 5.54 ERA. His availability for trade hinges on the Diamondbacks’ decisions leading up to the deadline. If they opt to sell, Gallen may become accessible, and the Cubs could very well express considerable interest.
With their offense firing on all cylinders and a playoff berth within reach, the Cubs are acutely aware of what is lacking: a premier starting pitcher. If they manage to secure the right one prior to July 31st, they will emerge as a formidable contender in October. However, if they remain inactive, their current pitching might not suffice for a successful postseason run. The clock is ticking.
