49ers Roll Past Titans 37-24 in Prime Time Showdown
The San Francisco 49ers (9-4) hosted the struggling Tennessee Titans (2-11) on Saturday night in a clash between two teams heading in opposite directions. The 49ers entered looking to extend their winning streak and strengthen their playoff position, while the Titans hoped to build momentum after their surprising victory over Cleveland last week.
First Quarter: Early Fireworks
The game started with both teams showing their offensive potential. San Francisco struck first after a methodical drive down the field. Quarterback Brock Purdy connected beautifully with tight end George Kittle for 23 yards, then scrambled effectively to keep the drive alive. The 49ers capped off their opening march when Purdy found Jauan Jennings in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
Tennessee answered right back with an impressive drive of their own. Tony Pollard, coming off his explosive 161-yard performance last week, showed his big-play ability with a 22-yard run that set up the Titans in the red zone. Rookie quarterback Cameron Ward then connected with tight end Gerald Helm for a 34-yard touchdown bomb that tied the game at 7-7. The quarter ended with San Francisco leading 7-3 after a Titans field goal.
Second Quarter: 49ers Pull Away
San Francisco's balanced attack took control in the second quarter. Christian McCaffrey, who has been having a remarkable comeback season after missing most of 2024, punched in a 1-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-7. The veteran running back showed the power and determination that made him an All-Pro.
The Titans managed to keep pace when Ward found Helm again for another touchdown, but the 49ers responded with a field goal before halftime. At the break, San Francisco held a 17-14 advantage.
Third Quarter: Purdy and Kittle Shine
The third quarter belonged to the 49ers' passing attack. Purdy, who continues to develop as a franchise quarterback, found his rhythm early. He connected with Ricky Pearsall for a spectacular 38-yard gain that showcased the young receiver's improved chemistry with his quarterback.
Moments later, Purdy found Jennings for his second touchdown pass of the game, extending the lead to 24-14. Late in the quarter, the 49ers put the game away when Purdy connected with the reliable Kittle for a 1-yard touchdown pass. Kittle, who finished with 88 receiving yards and 8 catches, proved once again why he's considered one of the NFL's elite tight ends.
Fourth Quarter: Titans Fight Back
Tennessee showed great heart in the final quarter. After forcing a fumble, the Titans capitalized when Ward threw a touchdown pass to defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, who reported as an eligible receiver. Later, Pollard capped off his solid 104-yard rushing performance with a 6-yard touchdown run.
However, the 49ers' experience showed as they controlled the clock and added two more field goals to seal the victory.
Looking Ahead
With this 37-24 victory, San Francisco improves to 10-4 and extends their winning streak to four games. They're now firmly in playoff position as the sixth seed and continue their push for a division title. Purdy's 295 passing yards and three touchdowns, along with Kittle's dominant performance, show this team is hitting its stride at the right time.
Tennessee falls to 2-12 but showed positive signs. Pollard's 104 rushing yards proved his big game last week wasn't a fluke, while Ward continues developing as their quarterback of the future. The young Titans are building something special for next season.
Both teams will look to finish the season strong in their upcoming matchups as the regular season winds down.
