How Turf Is Made
What Is Turf?
Turf is a type of artificial grass designed to resemble and feel like real grass, but it does not grow from soil. You may notice turf on various surfaces, such as football fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, and even in some residential backyards. Many professional sports teams utilize turf in expansive stadiums. For instance, games at the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys are hosted on artificial turf.
Turf is engineered to be durable, safe, and capable of enduring extensive running, jumping, and sliding activities.
Step 1: Making the Grass Fibers
The first step in manufacturing turf involves creating the “grass” blades. These blades are typically constructed from plastic materials like polyethylene or polypropylene. The plastic is melted down and extruded through tiny openings, forming long, thin strands. This process resembles squeezing toothpaste out of a tube.
Once the strands have cooled, they are cut to specific lengths and dyed green. Some turf even features various shades of green to enhance its realistic appearance.
Step 2: Building the Backing
Next, the plastic grass blades are stitched into a robust backing material. This backing serves to keep the blades standing upright. You can think of it as akin to sewing yarn into a rug.
The backing is usually composed of multiple layers of sturdy fabric and rubber, providing the necessary support to keep the turf flat and secure once it is installed.
Step 3: Adding Infill
After the turf is laid out on a field, workers distribute small rubber or sand pellets between the blades, a process known as infill. The infill helps to maintain the blades in an upright position and offers added cushioning for athletes.
Why Use Turf?
Turf requires no watering, mowing, or the application of fertilizer. It can withstand all kinds of weather conditions, making it a favored choice for schools and sports stadiums. Though it is not real grass, turf is meticulously crafted to mimic the look and performance of natural grass.
