Joe Burrow’s Turf Toe Injury Shakes Up the Bengals’ Season
The Cincinnati Bengals won their Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the big story was the injury to quarterback Joe Burrow. In the second quarter, Burrow was sacked and hurt his left toe. He tried to walk off, but the pain was too much, and he left the game.
What Is Turf Toe?
Burrow’s injury is called turf toe. Turf toe happens when the big toe bends too far backward. The big toe joint has ligaments, which are tough bands that hold bones together. In Burrow’s case, those ligaments were badly damaged. Doctors say he has a Grade 3 injury, which means the ligament is completely torn.
This type of injury makes it very painful to push off the foot, which is something quarterbacks must do to throw, run, and escape pressure.
Surgery and Recovery
Burrow will need surgery to repair the ligament in his toe. The recovery is expected to take at least three months. Some experts believe it could be even longer before he is ready to play again. If the timeline holds, the earliest he could return is around mid-December.
What It Means for the Bengals
Losing Burrow is a huge setback. He led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns in 2024 and is the centerpiece of Cincinnati’s offense. Without him, the Bengals’ chances of making a deep playoff run are much tougher.
Backup quarterback Jake Browning will take over. He showed some good moments against the Jaguars, throwing for 241 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions. The rest of the Bengals’ roster, including stars Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, will need to step up to keep the team in playoff contention.
The Bigger Picture
A Grade 3 turf toe injury with ligament damage is rare and serious. Even after surgery, it can take months of rehab to regain strength and mobility in the toe. For Burrow, who relies on strong footwork to throw and avoid defenders, this will be a major challenge.
The Bengals still have the talent to compete, but losing their star quarterback so early in the season is a crushing blow. Fans will now watch closely to see if Burrow can return before the playoffs, and if the team can stay alive until then.
