Atlanta Dominates Orlando From the Opening Tip
Atlanta wasted no time taking control on Monday night, March 16. The Hawks jumped out to a massive 34-21 lead after the first quarter, setting the tone for the entire game. By halftime, Atlanta led 67-50, and Orlando never found a way to close that gap. Although the Magic finished the game scoring 112 points, the Hawks pulled away for a convincing 124-112 victory. With no healthy Franz Wagner available, Orlando's offense struggled to find consistent rhythm against Atlanta's energized defense.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jalen Johnson Carry Atlanta
Atlanta's win was powered by two incredible performances. Nickeil Alexander-Walker was the night's biggest surprise, dropping 41 points while shooting 54.5% from the field in 37 minutes. Meanwhile, Jalen Johnson delivered yet another dominant outing with 24 points, 13 assists, and 15 rebounds — a triple-double that showed why he is Atlanta's cornerstone. Johnson shot 52.6% and finished with a +12 plus-minus. Together, these two players made Orlando's defense look helpless, combining for 65 points while controlling the flow of the entire game.
Banchero and Bane Struggle as Magic Fall Short
Orlando's two biggest stars had difficult nights. Paolo Banchero finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but his 23.1% shooting was a serious concern — he clearly struggled to convert against Atlanta's defense. Desmond Bane also scored 18 points, but his -24 plus-minus showed just how much the game got away from Orlando when he was on the floor. Wendell Carter Jr. was actually the team's most efficient scorer, hitting 60% of his shots for 17 points. However, those individual bright spots weren't enough to overcome Atlanta's dominant performance.
What's Next for Orlando's Playoff Push
Despite the loss, Orlando still sits at 38-29, ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference. The Magic remain a strong playoff contender, but this game revealed real concerns. Franz Wagner is still out without a clear return date, and Anthony Black missed the game while recovering from an abdominal muscle strain. With both players sidelined, Orlando's depth was exposed. If the Magic want to compete in the postseason, they need their full roster healthy and Banchero shooting efficiently. Tuesday brings a tough matchup against the Thunder, which is another big test.
