Mavericks Upset Cavaliers in Impressive Road Win
On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks pulled off a surprising road victory, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 130 to 120. What makes this win so impressive is that Dallas holds a 23-45 record and is still in the middle of rebuilding their team. Cleveland, sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference at 41-27, was heavily favored to win at home — but the Mavericks had other plans.
The game stayed competitive through the first half, with Dallas leading just 60-59 at halftime. Everything changed in the third quarter, when the Mavericks went on a strong run and stretched their lead to 100-86 heading into the fourth. Cleveland tried to fight back, but they could not overcome the deficit that Dallas had built during that explosive stretch.
The loss also raised questions about Cleveland's defense, especially since several key players were sidelined with injuries. Center Jarrett Allen missed his fifth straight game, which left a big gap in Cleveland's frontcourt. Even without a full roster, though, Dallas stayed focused and took advantage of every opportunity they got.
Cooper Flagg and Naji Marshall Dominate for Dallas
Cooper Flagg was the star of the game for Dallas, finishing with 27 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds while shooting nearly 59 percent from the field. The 6-foot-9 rookie controlled the game during key moments, showing poise well beyond his experience level. His ability to both score and create opportunities for teammates made him incredibly difficult for Cleveland to guard.
Naji Marshall also stepped up in a huge way, scoring 25 points on an efficient 66.7 percent shooting. Marshall added 7 assists and 5 rebounds, finishing with a plus-10 rating on the night. His activity on both ends of the floor kept the pressure on Cleveland and helped Dallas maintain their lead when it mattered most.
P.J. Washington rounded out an impressive team performance with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals. With Klay Thompson and Daniel Gafford both out due to illness, Washington needed to step up — and he delivered in a big way. His toughness and versatility gave Dallas a reliable veteran presence alongside their younger players.
Mitchell and Strus Fight Hard for Cleveland
Donovan Mitchell gave everything he had for the Cavaliers, finishing with 26 points and 11 assists in 39 minutes of play. Despite his big effort, Cleveland could not keep up with Dallas during the third quarter, when the Mavericks outscored them by 14 points. Mitchell shot just 41.7 percent from the field, and his minus-4 rating showed that the Cavs struggled even with their best player on the court.
One of the most surprising moments of the night came from Max Strus, who was making his 2025-26 regular season debut. Strus came off the bench and exploded for 24 points, shooting an incredible 77.8 percent from the field in just 23 minutes. He also grabbed 8 rebounds, giving Cleveland a much-needed boost at a tough time in the game.
Evan Mobley contributed 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks, while James Harden added 13 points and 7 assists. However, Harden shot only 33.3 percent and finished with a minus-5 rating. Without Jarrett Allen anchoring the frontcourt, Cleveland lacked their full strength inside, and Dallas took advantage of that weakness throughout the entire game.
What This Win Means for Dallas and Cleveland's Future
Sunday's result told the story of two teams heading in very different directions. Dallas is deep in a rebuild centered around Cooper Flagg, who is already looking like a future superstar at the NBA level. While a 23-45 record is tough, Flagg's two-way dominance and playmaking ability have given the entire Mavericks franchise a real reason to be excited about what's ahead.
Cleveland, meanwhile, remains a genuine playoff contender despite the loss. The Cavaliers are 41-27 and still fourth in the Eastern Conference. James Harden has brought a new dimension to their offense, and Evan Mobley continues to anchor their defense. Once Jarrett Allen returns from injury, Cleveland's frontcourt will be back at full strength.
Both teams have major questions to answer before the playoffs, but Sunday proved that no game is ever guaranteed. Dallas played with hunger and purpose, showing that even a rebuilding team can bring its best on any given night. Cleveland will need to sharpen their defense if they want to make a deep postseason run — but based on their talent, they are far from finished.
