Thunder and Spurs Ruling the Western Conference
The Western Conference playoff race is heating up, and two teams are clearly in a class of their own. The Oklahoma City Thunder sit at 55-15, the best record in the West. Right behind them, the San Antonio Spurs have built an impressive 51-18 record. Both teams are on winning streaks and playing their best basketball heading into the final stretch of the regular season. Meanwhile, every team below them is scrambling for position because the stakes get higher with each game played.
OKC Dominates, Spurs Prove They Belong
Oklahoma City has been nearly unstoppable. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging about 32 points per game, while Chet Holmgren adds around 18 points and 8 rebounds. Even with injuries to key players like Jalen Williams, the Thunder crushed the Brooklyn Nets 121-92 last Wednesday. Jared McCain stepped up with 26 points on 56.3% shooting. San Antonio is equally dangerous. Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle combine for roughly 62 points per game, giving the Spurs a versatile offensive attack that is extremely difficult to contain.
Lakers, Wolves, Rockets, and Nuggets Battle for Position
The middle of the Western Conference is packed with competition. The Los Angeles Lakers sit third at 44-25, powered by Luka Doncic averaging about 34 points per game and LeBron James still delivering vintage performances at 40 years old. Minnesota holds fourth at 43-27, and even without Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert keep the Wolves rolling. Houston sits fifth at 41-27 but has lost two straight, while Denver is sixth at 42-28 after dropping a surprising game to Memphis. Every game matters because seeding determines home-court advantage.
Play-In Bubble and Teams Watching From Outside
Below the top six, the battle for the play-in tournament is intense. Phoenix sits seventh at 39-30 but has lost two straight and faces injury concerns. The Clippers are eighth at 34-35, hanging on by the thinnest margin. Portland is ninth at 34-36, while Golden State sits tenth at 33-36 and is missing Stephen Curry to injury. Teams like Memphis, New Orleans, Dallas, Utah, and Sacramento are effectively out of the race, focused on developing young players for future seasons. The stretch run will decide who earns those final postseason spots.
