Cardinals Soar Past Saints 20-13 in Season Opener
The Arizona Cardinals started their 2025 season with a strong 20-13 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The team looked good with quarterback Kyler Murray healthy and the same offensive plan. Fans were excited to see the team improve.
First Quarter: Defensive Battle Sets the Tone
Both teams began the game carefully in a tough defensive matchup. The Cardinals scored first when kicker Chad Ryland made a 42-yard field goal after a slow drive that included short passes from Murray to tight end Trey McBride and running back James Conner. The Saints struggled with their new quarterback, Spencer Rattler, who had not won any games last season. Arizona led 3-0 after the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Offensive Fireworks Ignite
The second quarter brought more action. The Saints quickly responded when running back Alvin Kamara ran for an 18-yard touchdown, showing his skill as a reliable player for Rattler. New Orleans took a 7-3 lead.
The Cardinals did not back down. Murray found sophomore star Marvin Harrison Jr. for an exciting 45-yard pass down the right side. This showed how well the team had worked together during the offseason. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Jr., putting Arizona ahead 10-7.
After the Saints tied the game at 10-10 with a field goal, the Cardinals finished the half strong. Murray completed passes to McBride for 25 and 4 yards before connecting with Conner for a 4-yard touchdown. Conner had a good game, finishing with 39 rushing yards on 12 carries and 4 catches for 5 yards and the crucial touchdown. Arizona led 17-10 at halftime.
Third Quarter: Field Goals and Missed Opportunities
The third quarter was mostly about kickers and defense. Arizona increased their lead to 20-10 with a 50-yard field goal by Ryland after a long drive. The Saints had chances to score but could not make it happen, with kicker Blake Grupe missing a 37-yard field goal. Both teams had a hard time keeping their drives going as defenses tightened.
Fourth Quarter: Saints Rally Falls Short
New Orleans made it exciting in the last quarter, scoring a 28-yard field goal to bring the score to 20-13. The Saints' passing got better, with Chris Olave and Juwan Johnson making important catches.
With little time left, the Saints got the ball back and pushed into Cardinals territory. However, Arizona's defense held strong when it was needed, forcing three incomplete passes to secure the win.
Looking Ahead
This victory gives the Cardinals a great start with their key players healthy and working well together. Murray passed for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, completing 21 out of 29 passes, although he was sacked 5 times. McBride led in receiving with 61 yards on 6 catches, showing he is still Murray's favorite target.
For New Orleans, the loss highlights the challenges they face with a young quarterback. Despite the loss, there were good signs in Rattler's performance and Kamara's strong play.
The Cardinals will aim to keep this momentum going in their next game, while the Saints will focus on improving their timing for the next match. Both teams have shown they have potential for an exciting 2025 season.
