Raiders Beat Patriots 20-13 in Season Opener
The Las Vegas Raiders started their 2025 season with a tough 20-13 win over the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Both teams had high hopes after making big changes in the offseason to improve their chances.
Team Changes Are In Focus
The Raiders showed off their new look with head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Quarterback Geno Smith led a run-heavy style with rookie running back Ashton Jeanty and top tight end Brock Bowers, hoping to prove that their new system could compete well.
On the other hand, the Patriots aimed to show that their updates would pay off. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye returned with a stronger offensive line and new players, including veteran receiver Stefon Diggs and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson. New England was trying to do better after struggles last season with head coach Mike Vrabel.
First Quarter: Raiders Get the Lead
The game began with lots of action as both teams moved the ball well. The Raiders took the lead first when Geno Smith threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tre Tucker after a strong opening drive. Smith looked good in his new role, hitting Brock Bowers for 23 yards right away.
The Patriots responded quickly. Drake Maye led his team down the field with help from tight end Hunter Henry and running back TreVeyon Henderson. Maye ended the drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to DeMario Douglas, showing good teamwork with his slot receiver. After one quarter, the score was 7-7.
Second Quarter: Field Goals and Missed Chances
The second quarter turned into a defensive struggle. Both teams found it hard to score. The Patriots took a 10-7 lead at halftime with a 35-yard field goal by kicker Andy Borregales.
The Raiders had a chance to tie it before halftime, but kicker Daniel Carlson missed a 58-yard field goal attempt wide left as time ran out. Both teams had moments to score but struggled to finish drives.
Third Quarter: Raiders Gain Control
The third quarter belonged to Las Vegas. After Drake Maye threw an interception to Raiders safety Isaiah Pola-Mao, Geno Smith took advantage. Smith connected with Jakobi Meyers for 42 yards on two passes, leading to a 3-yard touchdown run by Ashton Jeanty.
Jeanty, the Raiders' first-round draft pick, showed why the team chose him. He finished with 38 rushing yards on 19 carries, but his touchdown gave Las Vegas a 14-10 lead. The Raiders increased their lead to 17-10 with a 51-yard field goal by Carlson.
Fourth Quarter: Patriots Make a Push
In the final quarter, both teams fought for every yard. The Raiders added another field goal to make it 20-10, but the Patriots kept trying. With time running out, Maye led a last-minute drive, connecting with receivers Kyle Williams and Hunter Henry.
The Patriots kicked a 44-yard field goal with 22 seconds left, making the score 20-13. They attempted an onside kick, but it went out of bounds, which allowed the Raiders to kneel and win the game.
Game Performances That Changed the Outcome
Geno Smith showed he was a great fit for the Raiders' new system. He threw for 362 yards and one touchdown while completing 24 of 34 passes. Brock Bowers was his top target, catching 5 passes for 103 yards, proving he is a rising star.
Drake Maye for the Patriots had some great moments, but he also threw a tough interception. The stronger offensive line helped, but the team still struggled to find a running game that worked well.
Looking Forward
This win gives the Raiders confidence that their changes can succeed in the tough AFC West. Their balanced offense and better play from the quarterback suggest good things ahead.
The Patriots, even with their disappointment, showed they can compete with their new players. The close loss shows they are making progress under their new coaching staff.
Both teams will look to build on this game as they prepare for their next opponents and continue their paths toward the playoffs.
