Seahawks Soar Past Jaguars 20-12 in Defensive Battle
Two teams heading in opposite directions collided in Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon. The Seattle Seahawks (3-2) arrived looking to find consistency in their new run-heavy offense, while the red-hot Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) aimed to continue their surprising championship push behind quarterback Trevor Lawrence's breakout season.
First Quarter: Defense Rules Early
Both offenses struggled to find their rhythm in the opening quarter. The Jaguars struck first blood when Trevor Lawrence connected with Brian Thomas Jr. for a spectacular 21-yard touchdown pass. Lawrence showed his dual-threat ability, scrambling and finding his favorite target in the corner of the end zone. However, kicker Cameron Little missed the extra point, leaving Jacksonville with just a 6-0 lead.
The Seahawks' offense, led by quarterback Sam Darnold, couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. Kenneth Walker III, the centerpiece of Seattle's ground game, managed only modest gains as Jacksonville's defense stepped up in crucial moments.
Second Quarter: Smith-Njigba Takes Flight
Seattle finally found their offensive spark in the second quarter, and it came from an unexpected source. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who has been building on his breakout performance from the previous week, absolutely exploded against Jacksonville's secondary.
First, Smith-Njigba hauled in a 32-yard pass to set up a Jason Myers field goal, cutting the deficit to 6-3. But he was just getting started. Later in the quarter, Darnold found Smith-Njigba streaking down the middle for a magnificent 61-yard touchdown bomb that sent the visiting fans into a frenzy. The extra point gave Seattle a 10-6 lead.
Jacksonville had multiple chances to respond but couldn't convert. Lawrence faced heavy pressure from Seattle's pass rush, getting sacked multiple times and struggling to find the explosive plays that had made him so dangerous this season. The Seahawks added another field goal before halftime, taking a 13-6 advantage into the locker room.
Third Quarter: Kupp Joins the Party
Seattle continued their offensive momentum in the third quarter. Cooper Kupp, the veteran receiver still adjusting to his new team, finally found his groove in the red zone. After a methodical drive featuring solid contributions from Walker and more precise passing from Darnold, Kupp caught an 11-yard touchdown pass to extend Seattle's lead to 20-6.
The Jaguars' offense continued to sputter. Lawrence, who had been playing at an elite level all season, found himself under constant pressure. The Seattle defense sacked him multiple times, disrupting the timing that had made Jacksonville's passing attack so dangerous with weapons like Travis Hunter and Thomas Jr.
Fourth Quarter: Jaguars Fight Back
Jacksonville showed championship heart in the final quarter. Lawrence found Tim Patrick for a 26-yard touchdown pass, giving the home crowd hope with the score now 20-12. The Jaguars attempted a two-point conversion but couldn't convert, leaving them still needing more than one score.
Despite getting the ball back multiple times, Jacksonville couldn't generate the explosive plays they needed. Seattle's defense held firm, and the Seahawks ran out the clock to secure a crucial road victory.
Looking Ahead
This victory moves Seattle to 4-2 and keeps their playoff hopes alive in a competitive NFC. Darnold threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns, while Smith-Njigba's 162 receiving yards proved he's becoming a reliable weapon.
For Jacksonville, the loss drops them to 4-2 but doesn't derail their strong season. Lawrence threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns despite the pressure, and Thomas Jr. added 90 receiving yards. They remain in excellent position for playoff contention.
Both teams will look to bounce back in Week 7 as the season continues heating up.
