Top 5 Super Bowls Ever - #2 Seahawks vs. Patriots (2015)
It was February 1, 2015, in Glendale, Arizona. Super Bowl XLIX (49) was unfolding under the dazzling lights, creating an atmosphere of intense competition. Two of the top teams in football had returned to the grandest stage, and neither squad showed any signs of backing down.
On one side were the New England Patriots, directed by quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots had not secured a Super Bowl victory in ten years and were eager to reclaim their position at the top.
On the other side were the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning champions. Their team was celebrated for its formidable defense, known as the Legion of Boom, alongside a powerful running game led by the robust running back, Marshawn Lynch. Seattle aimed to become the first team in over a decade to achieve back-to-back Super Bowl victories.
A Back-and-Forth Battle
From the very beginning, the game remained tightly contested. Both teams scored efficiently, responded emphatically, and stubbornly refused to gain a significant advantage over the other. At halftime, the Patriots held a slight lead at 14–10, but the Seahawks emerged revitalized in the third quarter.
Seattle scored twice and quickly established a 24–14 lead. It appeared that the defending champions were poised to seize control of the game. However, Tom Brady had different ideas.
In the fourth quarter, Brady orchestrated two lengthy touchdown drives. With precision passes, he propelled the Patriots down the field. With just over two minutes remaining, New England scored again, taking a 28–24 lead. The shift in momentum was palpable.
One Yard From Glory
Seattle was not finished yet and had one final opportunity. The Seahawks advanced all the way to the Patriots' 1-yard line with mere seconds ticking away. Everyone anticipated that Seattle would hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch, the best running back in the NFL at that time, in an effort to power into the end zone for the victory. Instead, the Seahawks decided to throw a pass.
Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler perfectly anticipated the play, stepped in front of the receiver, and intercepted the ball. The stadium fell silent for a moment and then erupted with excitement. The Patriots had triumphed.
Brady was named Super Bowl MVP after setting impressive records, but Butler’s interception, along with the Seahawks' surprising decision to throw, became one of the most iconic plays in NFL history.
Super Bowl XLIX (49) is remembered for its suspense, its remarkable comeback, and one astonishing decision at the goal line. Now, history comes full circle. The Patriots and Seahawks are scheduled to meet again this Sunday, February 8th, demonstrating that some rivalries are simply too captivating to conclude.
