Boston Holds Off a Red-Hot Booker in Overtime Thriller
Monday night at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics defeated the visiting Phoenix Suns 120-112. It was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip, with Phoenix actually leading after the first quarter, 32-31. Boston took control in the second quarter and held the advantage for most of the second half, but the Suns refused to go away quietly.
The game was competitive all night, with Phoenix trailing by just five points heading into the fourth quarter. Boston's depth and balance ultimately proved to be the difference. Four Celtics finished in double figures, making it difficult for Phoenix to key in on any single scorer. Meanwhile, the Suns were forced to rely heavily on one player to keep them in the game — and that player delivered in a big way.
Both teams entered this game with important players already sidelined. Phoenix was without Dillon Brooks, out with a broken hand, and also missing center Mark Williams. Boston was playing without center Nikola Vucevic, who suffered an injury just days earlier. Despite those absences, both teams put together competitive performances on a Monday night that had plenty of drama from start to finish.
Booker Goes Off, But Green and Suns Fall Short
Devin Booker was absolutely electric on Monday night, pouring in 40 points on 62.5% shooting in 37 minutes. He also added 6 assists and 3 rebounds, doing everything he could to carry the Suns. Without Brooks and Williams, Booker had to take on an even heavier workload than usual, and he responded like a true star.
Jalen Green also had a strong night statistically, finishing with 21 points and 7 rebounds. However, his minus-12 plus/minus rating showed that the Suns struggled when he was on the floor. Green shot just 40% from the field, and Boston's defense made things difficult for him throughout the game. Haywood Highsmith was efficient off the bench, chipping in 16 points on 50% shooting in just 19 minutes, and Grayson Allen added 13 more.
Even with Booker's incredible performance, Phoenix's supporting cast couldn't quite do enough. The Suns sit at 39-29, currently seventh in the Western Conference. With Brooks and Williams both expected to return later this month, Phoenix will hope to get healthy before the playoff push intensifies. For now, though, this was a tough road loss against one of the East's best teams.
Brown and Tatum Team Up to Power Boston's Win
Jaylen Brown led all scorers with 41 points, shooting 50% from the field over 40 minutes. He also grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists, putting together a complete two-way performance. Brown has been Boston's offensive engine all season, averaging nearly 30 points per game, and he continued to prove why he's one of the best players in the Eastern Conference.
Jayson Tatum added 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in his continued return from a serious Achilles injury. His plus-11 rating was the second-best on the team, and his presence clearly gave Boston an extra boost. Watching Tatum and Brown share the floor again is exciting for Celtics fans, because it gives Boston the kind of star power that can carry a team deep into the playoffs.
Derrick White was also a key contributor, finishing with 21 points, 5 assists, and strong defense in 30 minutes. Payton Pritchard added 19 points and 6 assists off efficient shooting. With four players scoring at least 19 points, Boston's balanced attack was simply too much for Phoenix to handle. The Celtics improved to 45-23 and remain firmly planted at second place in the Eastern Conference.
Boston Climbs to Second Place, Suns Eye Playoff Return
This win keeps the Celtics firmly in the race for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. With Tatum getting healthier and Brown playing at an All-Star level, Boston looks like a genuine championship contender. The combination of their star players and solid depth — including Pritchard and White — makes them one of the hardest teams to beat in the entire league.
For Phoenix, the story isn't over. The Suns are still seventh in the West at 39-29, very much in the playoff picture. Once Brooks and Williams return from injury, Phoenix's roster becomes deeper and more dangerous. Booker's 40-point night against one of the East's elite teams proves he can compete with anyone, and the Suns will need more performances like that down the stretch.
Both teams have a lot to play for over the final weeks of the regular season. Boston is chasing a top-two seed and building chemistry with Tatum back in the lineup. Phoenix is battling to hold onto a playoff spot and avoid the play-in tournament if possible. Monday's game was a great preview of what playoff basketball could look like — fast, physical, and full of star power.
